Webinar: Intro to Behavior Medications: What Are They, And How Can They Help?
Jennifer Summerfield, DVM
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(2 hr webinar)
Do you have a dog with behavior issues, or work with client dogs who do? If so, join us for a fun and informative discussion! You may already know how to address issues like anxiety, reactivity, or aggression from a training standpoint, but many dog owners and trainers are unsure about how medication might fit into the picture. In Part One, we will provide an overview of the most common medications used to treat behavior problems in dogs. Our focus will be on practical, “real-world” information including:
 How to know if your dog might benefit from medication
 Goals of using meds in behavior cases
 Different classes of drugs and how they work
 Natural supplements and calming aids
In Part Two, we will build on the information presented in “Intro to Behavior Medications” to take your knowledge to the next level. Delve into the nitty-gritty details of behavioral pharmacology as it relates to the following:
 Factors that influence medication choices for aggression, anxiety, etc. – which drug is best for different situations?
 Combination therapy (using multiple meds together)
 Case studies and examples for discussion
We will also discuss specific considerations for performance dogs, including the impact of behavior meds on learning and memory, and possible ethical questions that may arise when deciding whether or not to medicate a dog who is actively showing and competing.

FF230: Tricks With a Purpose
Sara Brueske
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6-wk course)
There are so many reasons why training tricks is beneficial to your dog, yourself and your relationship, tricks aren’t just for entertainment or rainy days anymore! Teaching tricks not only helps our dogs learn how to learn but also teaches us how they learn as well. Tricks can be used to teach concepts that appear in competition behaviors allowing us to teach those final behaviors more efficiently and with fewer mistakes. Plus, they allow us to mentally and physically exercise our dogs along with teaching them body awareness and control. This course will cover a variety of tricks, all handpicked for different functions and benefits. The majority of these tricks are not physically demanding and are suitable for any dog.

BH5100: Biology of Building a Great Performance Dog
Jessica Hekman PhD
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6-wk course)
We all want to do everything we can to make our next performance dog be the very best she can be. This means not just being a good trainer, but making good decisions about where our dogs come from, based on a solid understanding of how genetics and environment interact to affect the developing dog. We will learn about developing brains, the effects of genetics on behavior and health, and the importance of very early socialization, and we will grapple with the “to neuter or not to neuter” question, all based on recent scientific articles.
Jessica is a veterinarian who decided that she was more interested in learning how things go wrong with dogs than in how to fix them, so she went back to school (again) to get a Ph.D. in the genetics of dog behavior. She is actively engaged in research on how genetics affect the development of different personalities in dogs. She also has a lot of experience in teaching dog trainers and loves getting into geeky conversations with students about the biology of dogs. Having recently gotten a new performance dog and being hip-deep in training him for agility, parkour, and nosework, she also has an understanding of the unique perspective of the sports enthusiast who wants both a pet and a teammate.

OB540: Shaping the Competition Retrieve
Deborah Jones, PhD
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6-wk course)
In this class we will work through all the steps and fine details required to develop a precise and reliable competition-level dumbbell/scent article/glove retrieve. We will use shaping, rather than play, as the basis for this skill. Shaping the retrieve allows us to alter and improve tiny aspects of the behavior in a controlled and systematic manner. Each week in class we will introduce and strengthen a variety of behaviors that will lead to a fabulous and consistent retrieve. Students will work through a weekly task list and engage in problem solving at each stage in the process. Even if you have a retrieve, going back and working through these tasks will fill in any holes in your foundation and make your retrieve much better. Special attention will be paid to helping our dogs develop a strong positive emotional response to the dumbbell and the act of retrieving. We don’t just want them to do it; we want them to LOVE doing it!

OB510: The Elusive Hand-Delivered Retrieve
Donna Hill
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6 wk course)
Whether you are a serious obedience competitor, training your own service dog (or someone else’s), training your own bird dog, or want it for tricks (bring me a drink), the foundations of a solid hand-delivered retrieve are the same – yet very different than a play retrieve. Learn the steps to training this behavior so it is solid no matter how and where you need it. Even non-natural retrieving breeds can learn to do it happily!
Once you understand the pieces of a retrieve and how it can be back-chained, you can tease apart the pieces and retrain the parts that the dog is having challenges with, retrain those to perfection, then put the whole chain back together to get a fast, precise hand-delivered retrieve.
Whether too enthusiastic (pouncing, pawing or sliding) or disinterested (slow or distracted), chomping (chewing or throwing around in her mouth), refuses to take metal objects in her mouth, or not bringing the object close enough into your personal space is your dog’s issue, your classmates and I will give it our best training ideas to solve it. We’ll use a variety of different objects to train an enthusiastic retrieve from its basic foundations. Learn how to fine tune the retrieve to pick up small items like credit cards and coins.
Learn how to apply positive reinforcement training principles to create this challenging multi-step behavior.
All handlers and dogs must have a basic understanding of how a marker sound works for shaping as we will be shaping the problem pieces of the chain. You can spend more time on fine tuning and problem solving if your dog already has a strong nose touch to your palm, can sit and lay down in front of you, sit beside you and go around behind you back to heel position. Whether you will have a basic full retrieve at the end of 6 weeks is dependent on what you are working on and how skilled a trainer you are. Most students focus on one or two problem skills. This class is lecture heavy and video heavy with photos to show the subtleties of back chaining and using shaping. There are many tips and tricks to help with problem-solving.

Aug 2017 – Sep 2017
CC410: Helping Dogs Thrive: Aging Dogs
Lori Stevens
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6 wk course)
In this class we’ll learn about how to keep your aging dog’s mind and body active. As dogs age they typically lose hind-end strength, proprioception, and they just plain slow down just like we do– even mentally. As they age even more, they can lose function, e.g. going up stairs or getting in the car. Many of the tools and techniques you will learn in this class can be used with a dog of any age but this class is targeted at middle-age and older dogs.
In this class you will learn bodywork, movement, fitness, harness fit, tips for everyday life with older dogs and more. You will learn how to support your dog as they age, how to keep them active, and how to keep them functioning in everyday life. If your dog has lost function, e.g. the ability to do stairs, you’ll learn what you can do to help your dog regain function again. You will learn about equipment that will make your aging-dog enjoy life more. You will also learn things you can do that will make your own life easier while living, loving, and caring for an older dog.

Jan 2017 – Feb 2017
FF460: Introduction to Brain Games: Puzzles for Canines
Donna Hill
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6 wk course)
Games can help to our dogs to learn concepts and think about how they interact with their environment. Games and puzzles can also reveal to us how our dogs think and what they might be capable of, both on their own and with our help. We want to turn on the seeking system (see the research of Jaak Panskepp) that motivates our dogs to learn. The process of seeking, solving problems, hunting, searching, and learning is fun for us both!
In the last 10 years, there has been an explosion of studies done to help us understand dogs and their cognitive abilities in problem-solving, social skills, memory, how they perceive the world and much more! While there are literally hundreds of studies, researchers are just the beginning to open a door to help us learn just how complex our canine companions are.

FF280: Empowerment: A Course for Expanding your Dog’s Personal Power
Julie Daniels
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6 wk course)
Can your dog use some help with the physical and mental challenges of your favorite sport? Would you like for your dog to enjoy more activities with you? Would you like for your dog to meet new environments and novel stimuli with tail wagging and head held high? This class will help your dog choose to expand his world. Does your dog enjoy meeting new challenges? Does he need a moment to size up the effort, or does he charge in? Does he show curiosity and then need help with his coordination or his confidence? Does he investigate a physical skill with an open mind? Does he enjoy himself when he falls off the ball or the toy falls down with a crash? Does he do well with noise and balance and height and motion and pressure and space?
There are many dogs who have learned to tolerate the challenges of their sport, but they have not learned to love them. There is a world of difference between Tolerance and Empowerment!
We will use the concept of “Shaping for Demand” to help your dog start using each of our games to make you notice and make you pay. A new mindset is possible!
The right kind of exposure to new elements of difficulty can make all the difference in your dog’s future success. And your dog’s success with one activity makes it easier for him to succeed with other activities. Your dog will make physical and mental leaps of progress in this class!
Any age or size or breed of dog can benefit from the games we will play in Empowerment. Every game will be adapted for a dog who comes into the class with more confidence or less confidence. We can enjoy any baseline level of ability. We are only here to make personal progress.
We will build brain power and personal power. We will enhance your dog’s self reliance and sense of fun. We will help him enjoy going over, under, around, and through all sorts of contraptions. We will be making noise and problem solving in our safe spaces and then out in the real world.
You will not need much space and you will not need fancy equipment. This is a terrific winter project. We will be dealing in concepts, not just in obstacles. So you will be able to create homemade substitutes for any of the class obstacles, and the more creative the better! Creativity challenges will be part of the course discussions!
I use everything from bakeware to plastic bags and scrap materials of all kinds in my games for building confidence and coordination. I can think of a way to get into your dog’s head with a start point, and from there we will develop a plan. We are on a mission to create dogs who think that the unexpected in life is FUN!

Dec 2016 – Jan 2017
NW101: Introduction the Nose Work
Melissa Chandler
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy
(6 wk course)
Nose work is easily the hottest new sport around, and it’s easy to see why! It’s fun for humans, dogs love to participate, and it’s good for building confidence and focus in dogs that have issues like shyness, reactivity, aggression, or a simple lack of confidence. Any dog can participate; from puppies to very old or retired dogs. In a matter of weeks, you’ll see your dog confidently ignoring distractions and focusing on the target scent; and by the end of the course, many of the dogs will be ready to compete for their ORT.
This course is unique in that your dog will NOT learn to search for food; instead, we use the proven training method that produces the nation’s top drug and bomb detection dogs! Our backchaining method is effective on almost all dogs, from insecure and unfocused dogs to highly driven and intense workers. The proof is in the pudding; dogs going through only one or two levels of our courses are earning their ORT and NW titles in record time! Even if your dog has failed using other methods, we can help you succeed!
In this class, you will learn about the basic concepts in searching for odor, proper use of equipment, how to handle odor, how to make and place hides, and how to teach your dog the importance of odor obedience. You will also learn how to make the search for scent extremely important to your dog.

Reinforcement Strategies: How to Use Non-Food Reinforcers Effectively
Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice-President and Chief Training Officer of Karen Pryor Clicker Training
DVD Course (TawzerDog)
(2.5 hr course) 2.5 trainer CEUs
Reinforcement is the key to successful training, as most trainers already know! However, there are many different reinforcement strategies and reinforcement options available to trainers: consistent schedules, variable schedules, life rewards, toys, play, food, treats, etc. The mythology around how various schedules of reinforcement work can mislead trainers into using a strategy inappropriately and lead to frustration for the animal and the trainer. Many trainers fail to approach new reinforcement strategies systematically, which can be the reason why certain strategies seem to fail. This class will explore both the science behind these concepts and successful methods for implementing different types of reinforcement into a training program.

Emotions, the Engine of Behavior Change
Angelica Steinker, MEd, PCBC, AABP-DBCT, CDBC
DVD Course (TawzerDog)
(1.5 hr course) 1.5 trainer CEUs
Working with clients whose dogs have behavior issues presents us with special challenges, but Angelica suggests using an eclectic approach by drawing on a variety of academic areas. Angelica is presenting a new approach to behavior modification which empathizes the emotional states rather than behaviors. This includes the emotional state of the owner which Angelica views to be equally important to the dogs in order to have the best chance at a favorable outcome of the behavior modification process. new concepts of behavior myopia and emotional contagion are identified and discussed. Angelica is a sought-after presenter, fun, knowledgeable, and adamant that it be Force-Free. Jean Donaldson once said “Angelica is one of my all-time favorite trainers. Crafty, patient, humane and, most of all, devoted to making training fun for both the humans and the dogs.” ~Jean Donaldson, World-Renowned Dog Trainer.

Fright or Fight? Understanding the Complexities of Aggression and Fear
Suzanne Clothier
Clermont County Dog Training Club
Milford OH 45150
(8 hr seminar)
For many reactive dogs, biting or fighting are the choices they make when they run out of options, coping skills, and knowledge. Suzanne’s approach teaches handlers to see the fear and confusion that underlies many behavior and aggression problems, and choose different approaches. Emphasis is on reading canine body language, understanding use of space (macro & micro), the stimulus gradient, and “thin slicing” & skill building for success. A variety of practical techniques will be provided to help handlers and dogs both make choices that are comfortable and safe.

Arousal, Impulse Control & Problem Behavior
Ken McCort
PosiDog Canine Learning Center
Hilliard, OH 43026
(9 hrs) 9 CPDT CEU credits
How are behavioral choices established and maintained? What physical (neurological) changes occur as an organism learns to respond to stimuli? And how can we best establish control over or modify these responses?
Many dogs have arousal problems. This can lead to anything from jumping up, getting onto furniture, pulling on lead, hyperactive behavior etc., to more serious concerns like aggressive behaviors and separation anxieties. Without regular practice, they are not physically able to access the ability to respond appropriately in stimulating situations.
An overview of some basic dog neurology (the limbic system, frontal cortex function in dogs, specific motor patterns and behavioral response patterns, how selective breeding affects brain function, etc.) will help us evaluate specific methods and understand why they may – or may not – effectively change how a dog responds to environmental stimuli.
The importance of addressing underlying arousal and impulse control issues cannot be overstated. The dog’s ability to override previously learned behavioral responses and established behavior patterns can and does have a profound impact on the success of a behavior change program. Specific and regular exercises can help the dog inhibit or alter a previously learned response to stimuli – and facilitate more appropriate responses. Through video of this work with wolves, foxes and coyotes and practical demonstration with selected dogs, you will learn the how and why of these particular exercises and an effective and practical approach to changing problem behavior.
